Insurance Post-Crisis: Regulatory and Investment Challenges
November 16, 2010 - Harvard Club New York

The insurance industry substantially survived the financial crisis but now faces a new set of potentially longer-lasting regulatory and market challenges. Increased and evolving regulatory oversight and the persistent challenge of finding suitable investments will present ongoing challenges to management and performance in the insurance industry.

The concerns of policy-makers over the systemically risky links between insurance products, pension funds and other parts of the financial industry have led to calls for insurance firms to be included in much broader financial reforms. As new regulation is introduced and international regulatory standards converge, the impact on lines of business and asset strategies remains uncertain.

The search for adequate investment yields has become a major issue. Insurance companies have been reducing the risk in their portfolios and re-allocating funds toward higher-quality assets in a market that offer few choices of this flavour. Net investment income has become a less acute but slow and persistent threat to industry strength.

In the latest in their series of high-level forums on the key issues affecting the financial industry and capital markets, the Financial Times and Credit Suisse gathered senior financial executives to discuss these twin regulatory and investment challenges and explore how the insurance sector can rebuild financial strength and overall confidence after one of the worst crises in its history.
