Inflation or Deflation? The Economic Outlook and the Implications for Policy
20 January 2010 - Pearson Building, London

Opinions remain divided on the medium to long-term impact of the financial crisis and the global economic downturn, with some economists predicting a rocky but relatively straight path to greater stability, while others see clear signs of a double-dip recessionary trend and substantial pain ahead.

The actions of governments, so crucial a factor in the world economy's emergence from crisis, will continue to have a major influence. Will the huge stimulus plans introduced to stave off another Great Depression lead to a revival of inflation? How should policy-makers respond to that risk when unemployment rates remain so high? Should they in fact be on guard against the possibility of another recession and a deflationary environment, and maintain a loose monetary and fiscal policy?

Chaired by Martin Wolf, Chief Economics Commentator, Financial Times, this strategic forum gathered senior economists, regulators and financial sector executives to discuss the major drivers that will determine the outlook for the global economy and government policy in 2010 as we begin to emerge from one of the deepest post-bubble recessions in decades.
