In 2004 the EU working group on Urban Design for Sustainability agreed a common vision of urban design for sustainable development: “beautiful, healthy, socially integrated and inclusive places that promote equitable economic development.” This vision is easily frustrated by tangled legislation, slow planning systems, a lack of awareness and “the complexity of the holistic vision of sustainable development.” This panel of international experts share their visions for achievable, genuine sustainability.
